We think it's safe to say that South Africans are huge animal lovers, treating their fur babies as their family.
South African households own about 7.4 million dogs and 2 million cats, according to the first official count from Stats SA's General Household Survey. Vet bills for our beloved furry companions can add up quickly, and it is our duty, as their sole providers, to make sure they are looked after if they get ill or injured.
That's why pet owners should consider Pet Insurance.
Pet Insurance helps cover the cost of veterinary treatment when a dog, cat or other pet gets sick or injured. Plans generally include accident cover and illness cover, and some extend to routine care such as vaccinations and check-ups. It isn't Medical Aid, which is reserved for actual humans and is regulated under the Medical Schemes Act. Pet Insurance is a short-term insurance product instead, which means insurers can tailor plans and premiums to the individual pet, rather than charging every policyholder the same rate.
When a dog swallows something it shouldn't, or a cat picks a fight it thinks it can win, but won’t, the precious little things don't check your bank balance first. Pet Insurance turns an unpredictable vet bill into a monthly premium you can plan around, rather than a cost you have to find room for on short notice.
Most insurers set an age limit for adding illness cover, and they apply a waiting period before claims are accepted. Taking out cover while your pet is young and healthy avoids running into those restrictions later on.
Broken bones, swallowed objects, a tangle with other more feral wildlife and road injuries are among the most common reasons pets end up at the vet in an emergency. Accident cover generally applies for all ages and with a shorter waiting period than illness cover, which is why it's often the first type of protection owners take out.
Birds, reptiles, rabbits and even horses can be covered too, though premiums and terms differ from standard dog and cat cover depending on the species and its specific health needs. Only a handful of insurers extend their cover to exotic and equine.
Unlike Medical Aid which is regulated and somewhat standardised for Humans. Pet Insurance plans vary quite a bit between providers, in what's covered, what's excluded, and how the excess works. That’s because it’s often tailored to your pet, their history and your needs.
Comparing a few plans side by side makes those differences easy to see before you commit to one.
Nobody wants a treatment decision for a sick or injured pet to come down to what's left in the bank that month. Having cover in place means the choice stays about what's best for your pet, not what you can stretch to right now.
Pet Insurance cover has its limits. Common exclusions include pre-existing conditions that showed signs before the policy started, pregnancy and giving birth, grooming, behavioural training, dental procedures such as removing rotten teeth, and standard preventable illnesses like worms. Hereditary conditions such as hip dysplasia are sometimes excluded too, though some comprehensive plans include them.
Note: Always confirm your policy’s exact coverage and exclusions with your insurer.
Most policies apply an excess per claim, along with an annual limit on how much they'll pay out. Some also require cash upfront where you can claim-back. Sub-limits often apply to specific costs such as hospitalisation, diagnostics and chronic medication.
Reading the policy wording before you commit tells you exactly what you're covered for, and what you're not.

South African residents made close to 9.6 million trips through the country's ports of entry and exit in 2025, up 10.4% on the year before (Stats SA, International Tourism 2025 report). Every one of those trips carries the same risk, that something can go wrong far from home, and your South African Medical Aid probably won't help. That's what Travel Insurance is for.
