4 reasons to consider a Vehicle Tracker in South Africa

4 reasons to consider Vehicle Tracking in South Africa

Somewhere in South Africa, a driver is handing over their car to someone who did not ask nicely. It happens roughly every 36 minutes, according to the latest SAPS figures, and knowing your number plate off by heart does very little to help once your car has vanished into traffic. However, knowing exactly where it is does.

That is the basic logic behind Vehicle Tracking, and it is why so many South African drivers treat it as a given rather than an extra.

What is Vehicle Tracking?

Vehicle Tracking in South Africa uses a GPS-based, and often VHF-backed (very high frequency-backed), car tracking device fitted discreetly to your vehicle and monitored around the clock by a tracking company’s control centre.

If your car is stolen or hijacked, you report it, the tracking company activates the unit, and a recovery team is dispatched for stolen vehicle recovery using live vehicle location data. Some systems also cover motorbikes, light commercial vehicles and heavy goods vehicles.

It sits alongside your Car Insurance rather than replacing it. Insurance pays out if the worst happens. Tracking improves the odds that the worst never quite happens, or that your car comes home before a claim is even needed.

4 reasons to consider Vehicle Tracking

1. Hijacking has not gone away

Vehicle crime is trending in the right direction, but what this really means is relative. SAPS recorded 3,609 carjackings nationally between January and March 2026, down from 4,533 in the same quarter the year before (SAPS Q4 2025/26 Crime Statistics, reported by The South African, May 2026).

Encouraging, yes. Reassuring enough to skip installing a tracker, not quite.

Once a vehicle is gone, a tracking unit and a control centre working the case gives you a far better chance of recovery than hoping it turns up on its own. In contracts recovery teams work off live location data.

2. It can lower your Car Insurance premium

Insurers price a policy against risk, and a car that is harder to permanently lose is a lower risk. Some providers offer discounts for vehicles fitted with an approved car tracker when you compare Car Insurance quotes, which can make an impact on your monthly payments rather than only helping when something goes wrong.

3. Certain vehicles are hard to insure without one

Every insurer has their own requirements. However, as an example, bakkies in particular sit high on hijacking and theft lists, and they would require an approved tracker before an insurer will cover higher-risk models at all.

If you are driving one of South Africa's most targeted vehicles, tracking may not be optional in practice, whatever the fine print says.

4. Modern tracking does more than recover a stolen car

Today's systems typically include a panic button for emergencies, geofencing that alerts you if your car leaves an agreed area or you enter a high-risk area, as well as driver behaviour monitoring. Many GPS tracking devices also provide live tracking, trip history and an app that lets you check your car’s location from your phone. These safety features can be useful for parents handing over the keys to their kids, business owners keeping an eye on a small fleet, and fleet operators managing day-to-day operations.

Fitting a tracker does not mean switching insurers or restructuring your policy. It is a standalone device and subscription that works alongside whatever Car Insurance you already hold, professionally installed by an approved fitment centre in an afternoon.

When does Vehicle Tracking become essential?

Tracking matters most for vehicles that sit high on South Africa's theft and hijacking lists, bakkies and popular sedans in particular, for cars that are financed or leased, and for anyone driving regularly through higher-risk areas. It can also make sense for fleet tracking, where GPS technology can help fleet operators manage vehicle location, driver safety and day-to-day operations. It is less critical for an older vehicle with low resale value parked safely off the street every night, though even then, most owners find the monthly subscription easy to justify against the alternative.

What Vehicle Tracking does not do

A tracker does not prevent a hijacking from happening, and it does not guarantee recovery in every case. Recovery rates are widely advertised by individual providers, but figures vary between companies and are not consistently independently audited, so treat any single number with a healthy amount of scepticism and ask a provider directly for verified data before you commit.

Note: Tracking is not a substitute for comprehensive Car Insurance. It is a layer of protection that improves your odds of recovery, it is not a guarantee.
