A runaway shopping trolley in a parking lot. A gate that's slightly narrower and swifter than it looks. Someone else's bumper nudging yours at 5km/h while you’re in a parking lot. None of it is dramatic enough for a full insurance claim, but it still costs money to fix, and it still makes your car look a little less like the one you take pride in showing up in. That's the what Scratch and Dent Cover is built for.
It's not a product most people think about until the first chip appears. Here's what it is, when it becomes worth having, and why it's worth including when you compare your cover.
Scratch and Dent Cover (also called scratch and dent insurance) is an add-on motor product that pays for the repair of small chips, scratches and dents on your vehicle's bodywork, the kind of cosmetic damage that happens during everyday driving and parking rather than in a serious accident. It sits alongside your main Car Insurance policy rather than replacing it, and it's designed specifically for minor, day-to-day marks rather than more serious collision damage.
In South Africa, cover is generally available for vehicles up to 30 years old, and most policies only allow claims after an initial waiting period from the start date, typically around 30 days, to prevent cover being taken out for damage that's already there.
Your comprehensive Car Insurance is built for the big stuff: a collision, a theft, a write-off. Claiming on it for a shopping trolley scratch usually isn't worth it once you factor in your excess and the risk of it affecting your no-claim bonus. Scratch and Dent Cover is designed to absorb exactly this kind of low-value, high-frequency damage instead.
Every claim on your main policy, however small, can put your no-claim bonus at risk, and that bonus is often the difference between a fair premium and an expensive one. Because Scratch and Dent Cover is a separate policy, using it for minor cosmetic repairs doesn't touch your Car Insurance claims history.
Small dents and scratches accumulate faster than people expect, and a car covered in minor blemishes tends to fetch less at trade-in or resale, even if it runs perfectly. Keeping the bodywork in good condition through small, regular repairs protects that value over time.
If your car is leased or part of a company vehicle fleet, there's often an expectation that it comes back in good cosmetic condition. Scratch and Dent Cover becomes especially useful here, since the cost of accumulated minor damage can otherwise land on you in one lump sum at the end of the agreement.
Because scratch and dent claims are capped to minor cosmetic damage rather than major repairs, this type of cover is typically priced lower than comprehensive add-ons that cover bigger risks. It's worth comparing quotes to see what a realistic monthly cost looks like for your specific vehicle.
Scratch and Dent Cover doesn't require switching insurers or restructuring your main policy. It's typically bought as a standalone add-on, which means you can compare it on its own merits and add it to whichever Car Insurance policy you already hold.
Scratch and Dent Cover tends to make the most sense once a car is fairly new or driven daily in conditions where minor knocks are likely, think tight parking, gravel roads, school pick-up zones or busy office parking. It's less relevant for a car nearing the end of its life or one that's rarely driven. If you find yourself paying out of pocket for small bodywork repairs more than once a year, that's usually the signal it's worth comparing.
This type of cover has clear limits, and it's worth understanding them before you buy. Cover generally excludes* damage from a collision or other accident, damage that isn't a chip, scratch or dent (such as a cracked windscreen or broken aircon), pre-existing damage from before the policy started, and vehicles used for hire and reward, goods transportation, or commercial use over 3500kg, along with quad bikes and motorbikes. Claims are also usually subject to a time limit from the date of the incident, so damage needs to be reported promptly rather than left to accumulate.
*Always refer to your policy for exact exclusions

Tyre and Rim Cover (also called rim insurance) is an add-on motor product that pays for the repair or replacement of tyres and rims damaged by road hazards such as potholes, debris and uneven surfaces. It's typically bought alongside your main Car Insurance policy, either as a standalone product or bundled in as an extra, rather than replacing your comprehensive cover.

Somewhere in South Africa, a driver is handing over their car to someone who did not ask nicely. It happens roughly every 36 minutes, according to the latest SAPS figures, and knowing your number plate off by heart does very little to help once your car has vanished into traffic. However, knowing exactly where it is does. That is the basic logic behind Vehicle Tracking, and it is why so many South African drivers treat it as a given rather than an extra.
