5 reasons to consider Travel Insurance in South Africa

South African residents made close to 9.6 million trips through the country's ports of entry and exit in 2025, up 10.4% on the year before (Stats SA, International Tourism 2025 report). Every one of those trips carries the same risk, that something can go wrong far from home, and your South African Medical Aid probably won't help. That's what Travel Insurance is for.

It's easy to leave off the pre-flight checklist list until something goes wrong. Here's what it covers, when it's compulsory, and why you should compare insurers.

What is Travel Insurance?

Travel Insurance covers you financially while you're away from home, generally for medical emergencies, trip cancellations or delays, and lost or stolen luggage and documents. Cover levels vary from a basic Budget plan built to meet visa requirements, up to a Comprehensive plan that adds cancellation cover, higher medical limits and cover for adventure activities.

5 reasons to consider Travel Insurance

1. Your Medical Aid probably doesn't follow you overseas

Most South African Medical Aid schemes offer limited cover, or none at all, once you cross the border. Private hospitals abroad generally expect payment upfront or proof of cover before they'll treat you, and a serious illness or injury without that in place can be one of the more expensive experiences of your life.

2. A Schengen visa application won't be approved without it

If you're applying for a Schengen visa, travel medical insurance is not optional. EU law requires a minimum of €30,000 in medical cover, valid across all Schengen countries for the full length of your stay, before a visa will even be considered (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, Article 15).

3. Medical evacuation and repatriation are hard to arrange on your own

If you're injured somewhere without the right medical facilities nearby, getting to proper care, or getting home, isn't something most people can organise or afford unassisted. Travel Insurance providers include 24/7 emergency assistance and can arrange and settle evacuation or repatriation directly.

4. Cover extends well beyond medical emergencies

A Comprehensive plan typically reimburses non-refundable costs if your trip is cancelled or cut short, and covers delayed, damaged or lost luggage, not only medical treatment. That's often the part travellers forget to plan for, until a flight is cancelled or a bag doesn't arrive.

5. Credit card cover usually isn't enough on its own

Some credit cards include a form of complimentary travel cover, but it's typically limited in scope and value. A Top-Up policy lets you add to what your card already offers, rather than relying on it as your only protection.

What Travel Insurance generally doesn't cover

Most policies exclude pre-existing medical conditions unless you've declared and been accepted for them upfront, along with claims connected to travel against official government advisories, and losses from activities not included in your specific plan, such as certain adventure sports. Before travelling, it’s recommended to readi the policy wording, and ask about anything you're unsure of.

6 reasons to consider Pet Insurance in South Africa

Pet Insurance helps cover the cost of veterinary treatment when a dog, cat or other pet gets sick or injured. Plans generally include accident cover and illness cover, and some extend to routine care such as vaccinations and check-ups. Pet Insurance is a short-term insurance product instead, which means insurers can tailor plans and premiums to the individual pet, rather than charging every policyholder the same rate.
