Around The Spend: Hyundai i20

Red Hyundai i20 driving on a mountain road

In this edition of Hippo’s Around the Spend, we focus on the HYUNDAI i20 and other stuff that starts with an “i” you could use to buy with the money you save.

The Hyundai i20, yesterday

There’s no ‘i' in team but there are two in the Nineties. A time when the tech-nerd messiah returned to Apple and revived the company he started with the iMac in 1998. After that ingenious piece of branding and marketing, suddenly almost every product had an “I” as a prefix. The Century of Self-made manifest in the form of highly individualised products, ones which Jobs himself said “were made for people who don’t like to read instruction manuals”.

Hyundai, always a company which follows - but not necessarily sets – trends, eventually jumped onto the iWagon in 2008 with the launch of their i20 model. Now in its Third Generation, it has been a hit with sensible and somewhat sophisticated single women across SA.

Hippo’s data shows that many i20 drivers, mainly between the ages of 20 and 25 living in Gauteng have been using Hippo’s comparative service to get the best quotes for car insurance on their i20s.

On average they save R390* per month using Hippo, which got us wondering, what other products – containing the now ubiquitous ‘I” moniker could they potentially use that money for?

APPLE iPRODUCTS

The obvious choice is to go with Apple’s wide range of offerings. There was the now sadly defunct iPod which was iconic for a certain generation of music hoarders, the iPad which is generally only used to keep children quiet these days and the iWatch designed for your wrist to show people that you’re planning on exercising at some point that day. These shiny status symbols (unlike your reasonably priced i20) are notoriously expensive, which is why most non-tech billionaire people like us are forced to pay them off. The new iMac 24-inch comes in at around R32 999, which could be yours using PayFlex and can be paid off over 3 Months, interest free, which is nice of them if you’re willing to splash out over R10 000 per month.

If you want to buy an iPhone 11 (which is really all the phone you need) you find one for R9 999 and through MobiCred, you can pay it off over 12 months at R979pm, meaning the money you save with Hippo is about a third of your monthly repayments.

Apple products including iPad, MacBook, iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods

The i20 also comes with a built-in Apple Play system, so you can pump your tunes (not from iTunes anymore) but through Apple Music or your preferred platform, like Spotify or YouTube Music. Just a warning though, once you go Mac, you never go back. Even the address of their HQ in Cupertino, California’s address is 1 Infinite Loop boulevard or something.

NOTE: While Hippo is impressed with Mac’s wizardry, we are pretty amped about our own easy-to-use systems at Hippo which get you 11 comparative car quotes on whatever you drive in minutes, to save you bucks.

ID CARD

There is no greater feeling of dread than losing your ID in South Africa or your ID book expiring. It means a trip into the bowels of bureaucratic hell at your local Home Affairs Office. However, at only R140, the R390* you save with Hippo can get you one easily and have money left over for your ID book’s photos and potentially energy drinks, snacks and data to keep you entertained all morning and afternoon while you hope you’re in the right queue.

NOTE: Hippo’s system is never on lunch, popped out for a tea break or unavailable due to training and we’ll never turn you away saying “the system is offline”. We’re there 24/7 to get you the best deal on car insurance and a host of other products like Personal Loans, Life Cover and a whole lot more.

I&J

After a long weekend around the braai, watching the Bokke and eating whatever you please - on a Monday most of us feel like something a little fresher and lighter. Since 1910, I&J have been part of the South African family home and their Light & Crispy hake is one of the go-to, easy to prepare meals. You can chuck them in the airfryer with some chips or oven bake them and gooi a salad on the side to make you feel a little better about the weekend excess.

If you don’t have an iFryer, sorry AirFryer, firstly what have you been doing with your life and secondly you can pick one up from Takealot for only R601 bucks. With your R390* Hippo saving that can be yours in a couple of months with some change.

I&J’s classic Light & Crispy is around R109.99 at most major retailers which means you can get almost a full month of meat-free Mondays with your Hippo saving of R390pm*.

NOTE: An airfryer gets your food sorted in minutes and is relatively healthy, whereas Hippo is carb-free and free to use and only takes 2 minutes to get you the best deal.

iSIXHOSA or iSIZULU LESSONS

If you don’t already speak one of South Africa’s most prevalent languages, it’s time iLearn. Utalk offers online Zulu courses from only R39 per month, which means you have 10 months of Mzansi eloquence awaiting you with the R390pm* our amakhasimende onga ngokwesilinganiso (customers save on average!).

There's an ‘i” in Hippo, and it may stand for insurance, independence, individuality, insights or incredible savings - or all of the above. No matter what car you drive, get iSavings at Hippo right now.
