Feel epic this winter by saving on costs

Winter is creeping up and so are unexpected costs that come with keeping warm during the cold months. Electricity usage is higher as more people are spending time indoors and use additional electrical appliances such as heaters and electric blankets to stay warm. With these increasing costs to consider, how can you save a buck or two this winter?

“Winter need not be a miserable or costly season,” says Derek Wilson, Head of Hippo.co.za, the free financial comparison website, “There are many ways in which people can save on costs and still stay warm this winter.”

  • Insulate your home
If your home is well insulated, you are able to save on electricity costs as you need not have heaters on for long periods. Insulate your home by hanging thick curtains on all the windows and placing carpets on tiled or wooden floors. You can also insulate your geyser with a geyser blanket in order to minimise heat loss and save energy.

  • Close the doors
It may seem obvious, but many people do not think consciously about closing doors to unoccupied rooms in order to keep the heat you have generated in a specific room or area from escaping. This will also allow you to switch heaters off after the area is warm enough and save on electricity costs.

  • Let the sunlight in during the day
If the sun is out, open up the curtains during the day and let the sunlight in to heat your home naturally. Remember to close the curtains again before the sun goes down in order to retain the heat.

  • Install a geyser timer
This is one of the biggest ways to save as you regulate when you need hot water. It is widely publicised that you could easily save 25% or more on your electricity costs since the geyser uses most of the homes electricity.
