More than 5 900 crimes are reported by the over 1 118 police stations in South Africa every day. According to 2013’s crime statistics, Gauteng is the leader when it comes to crime in South Africa, with Cape Town and Kwazulu-Natal close on its tail.  Mitchells Plain in the Western Cape reports more crime than any other precinct in the country.

“In general, crime occurs in all neighbourhoods in South Africa. But the frequency and level of crime in a specific area does have an impact on your insurance premium,” says Derek Wilson, Head of Hippo.co.za.

According to Lizette Lancaster, manager of the Crime and Justice Information Hub, crimes like home invasions, robberies, burglaries and carjackings are a major concern.  Resident suburbs like Sandton, Parkview, Durban North, Table View and Woodstock are ‘safer’ suburbs compared to Honeydew, Akasia, Cape Town Central, Worcester and Phoenix.
