Time to spring clean your home insurance cover

Spring-cleaning season is here! The flowers are blooming, heaters and blankets will be no more, and it is time to declutter. Declutter your policies while you are at it, and make sure you have the best protection in place for what is arguably your most expensive asset.

“By cleaning out the clutter you can minimise your home’s risk of fire and damage to your personal properties,” says Derek Wilson, Head of hippo.co.za the free comparison website. “Make sure that all flammable items are kept away form heater vents and elements and check that all your smoke detectors/ fire extinguishers are operational.”

Wilson goes on to add, “New additions and home improvements which increase the value of your home need to be updated on your insurance policies.” Spring cleaning provides the perfect opportunity to recognize maintenance issues. “A lack of maintenance could be a problem when there is an insurance claim.”

And to really get you into de-cluttering, spring cleaning mode, here are five spring cleaning tips* from Hippo.co.za your online consumer champion:

  1. Dust before vacuuming or cleaning the floor using a feather or lambs wool duster.
  2. Don’t stand your brooms on their bristles, as it destroys their shape and diminishes their effectiveness. Getting a broom holder will not only keep your broom in its shape, it is also a good organiser.
  3. Your walls may not look like they need to be cleaned but they do. Some dust falls off vertically. Take a damp soft sponge with dishwashing detergent and wipe in circular motion.
  4. Remove dust and dirt from ceiling fans and air-conditioner vents with a cloth and a vacuum with a soft nozzle attachment.
  5. Clean the refrigerator’s condenser coil, usually found behind the toe grille. Effectively clean it by using a long handled brush and a small nozzle attachment vacuum cleaner to remove dust and lint.
